Fitting Food In The Landscape

Fitting Food In The Landscape

Brian and Gabrielle Schrock had the enthusiasm and willingness to learn that is essential for aspiring gardeners. What they didn't have? Flat Land.

With thoughtful garden planning, we helped them make the best use of their suburban space with 3 terraced raised beds in the backyard, and a terraced planter with a french drain in the front.

Through our Garden Mentorship Program we supported them from planning, building, planting, harvest, and everything in between. They had access to us to ask questions, even after we provided them with their garden plan and step-by-step guide full of resources. We still love hearing about their garden (and kid's involvement) today!

Make Best Use of the Land You Have

The raised planter boxes In both the front and back yard serve a dual purpose: Grow food AND manage erosion! The planters act as retaining walls, while the access pathways mimic terraces. Dimension and structure is KEY to slowing down water, and managing erosion. These formerly eroded, inaccessible slopes, now have SO much more to offer.

The Schrocks are now growing grapes up a trellis in the front yard planter, with broccoli, zucchini, and lots of flowers in the lower beds. In the back, they have dedicated the beds to veggies like tomatoes, peppers, watermelons, and more - which are thriving thanks to the growing info, foundational knowledge, and organic management strategies provided in their Garden Plan! With this info at their fingertips, the Schrocks skipped years of trial and error.
